On the Up: employment laws changed in favour of employees

Jon FriendImportant employment law changes implemented today (1 October 2009)

1. Workplace Parking Levy. A pilot scheme to encourage employers to give their employees an incentive not to commute by car means that employer’s in Nottingham will have to pay for their staff parking, with the option to pass the charges to employees.

2. New regulations today mean that employers can no longer include service charges / tips to top up pay to the national minimum wage.

3. The  National Minimum Wage is today increased to:
- £5.80 an hour for workers aged 22 and over;
- £4.83 an hour for workers aged 18 to 21 inclusive; and
- £3.57 an hour for young workers under 18.

This change is likely to affect nearly a million of the lowest paid workers. The Government ignored the employers lobbying against the increase, refusing to deny this increase to low wages.

4. A week’s pay, the limit for redundancy pay and unfair dismissal awards is increased from £350 to £380. This change, undoubtedly welcomed by employees may  cause some liability for employers who are not aware of the change.
